Teenage Health Unit

  • The Teenage Health Unit (THU), established in 1985, provides comprehensive primary care to youths between the ages of 13 and 19. It provides cutting-edge training in adolescent medicine and psychotherapy to family medicine residents and psychology interns.

Donated funds are used to deliver psychotherapy to teens for a wide variety of mental health problems, including depression and suicidal tendencies, anxiety disorders, self-mutilation, physical and sexual abuse, ADHD, eating disorders, substance abuse, bullying, family discord, anger management problems, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Therapists at the THU use cognitive behaviour therapy, the gold standard in psychotherapy, in providing nearly 2,000 psychotherapy sessions per year.

In addition to one-on-one psychotherapy, the THU offers group therapies that take a trans-diagnostic approach with the aim of having the participants learn evidence-based strategies and techniques to better regulate strong unpleasant emotions and reduce the urge to engage in non-suicidal self-injurious behaviours or suicide.

The THU offers these and other services to patients of the Goldman Herzl Family Practice Centre as well as to teenagers who do not have a pediatrician or family doctor (“GP”) to turn to.

The THU has an outreach program, with twice monthly visits to high schools throughout the greater Montreal area. Each year, through these visits, our physicians and nurses provide interactive biopsychosocial educational services to anywhere from 5000 to 7500 teenage students in approximately 20 schools.

Through donated funds, the THU created and delivers a series of workshops to enhance the ability of school-based guidance counsellors, psychologists, social workers, and other student services staff to effectively address the ever-worsening mental health problems of their students. A modified version of this workshop series addressed the needs of the students and staff of an elementary school in Mistissini that is part of the Cree School Board.

Using donated money, the THU is creating a cross-institutional model to enhance care for suicidal teenagers sent to Emergency Departments across the Greater Montreal area. The goal is to ensure that vulnerable adolescents receive the comprehensive and coordinated care they need when in suicidal crisis.
